PUBG, by the way, is built using Epic's Unreal engine, and both Epic and PUBG Corp. dropped its copyright lawsuit against Epic that had accused the company of copyright infringement over battle royale phenomenon Fortnite. ![]() ![]() However, games made with Unreal will see Epic waive all engine royalties on revenue generated through the store.Įpic boss Tim Sweeney told Eurogamer over email he's open to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds launching on the Epic Games Store, despite the strained relationship between Epic and PUBG developer PUBG Corp.Įarlier this year, PUBG Corp. So, games made with Unity, for example, can make the cut. Epic said it's open to games developed with any game engine, not just its own Unreal. The Epic Games Store launches soon with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac, Epic said, and it'll open up more broadly to additional games and other open platforms throughout 2019. Epic's own chart compares the revenue split on its own store with that of Steam, although it's worth noting Valve takes a smaller cut for games that make $10m and over. That announcement, made just a few days ago, is interestingly-timed in the context of Epic's own announcement today. However, Valve recently announced plans to drop its cut to 25 per cent once revenue from a game hits $10m, and then another drop to 20 per cent for earnings over $50m. Historically, Valve has taken around a 30 per cent cut of revenue made on Steam, a figure broadly in-line with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft's cut from their own digital storefronts. This is a much better deal for developers than currently available from Steam. The Epic Games Store features an eye-opening 88/12 per cent revenue split in favour of developers. There are loads of developers out there selling content for up to £($)99 but it’s up to the end user to decide whether to pay these extortionate prices for “just a bit of extra programming”.Epic has announced plans to take on Steam with a PC games store of its own. It’s your choice to place your concession there or not.Īlso I didn’t buy my iPhone to play fortnite as I’m sure many other people didn’t either so again people have a choice which platform they use if they really wanted to play fortnite so if there are other cheaper options out there, why doesn’t epic push their users towards that platform which apparently doesn’t charge a 30% fee.Īt the end of the day, epic are also allowed to price accordingly so if they were really about the consumer then why not lower your own in app purchase prices. If you have a concession in a department store, you have to pay some form of rental decided by the store/owner. It is more like Epic setting up shop and selling things inside an Apple Store without paying any rent Epic cries in the store that they made the products they are selling not Apple, so Apple should let them stay there for free. The shoplifting analogy that Apple uses isn't very good. They want to leech off Apple and Google, but are willing to pay 30% to Microsoft and Sony (for now). The reason Epic can make so much money, is that Apple, Google, Microsoft and Sony have put a lot of R&D and marketing into iOS, Android, Xbox and Playstation. If Epic wants to sell direct to the consumer, they should make their own hardware. ![]()
